Growth of catalyst-assisted and catalyst-free horizontally aligned single wall carbon nanotubes

چکیده
Here, we report the growth of homogenously horizontally aligned single wall carbon nanotubes on stable temperature cut single crystal quartz using chemical vapor deposition with controllable yield and length from binary metallic mixtures as well as fullerene derivatives. We manage the yield and length of the as-grown tubes on stable temperature cut single crystal quartz by controlling the surface roughness of the support substrates by thermal treatment in air. Carbon caps derived from pre-treated fullerenes are also explored for their potential to nucleate growth of single wall carbon nanotubes without the need of a catalyst particle. Exohedrally functionalized fullerenes are apparently better nucleators than C60 fullerenes. Yield of the as-grown single wall carbon nanotubes on thermally annealed ST-quartz substrates.

Growth of all-carbon horizontally aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes nucleated from fullerene-based structures
All-carbon single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were successfully synthesized, nucleated using a fullerene derivative. A systematic investigation into the initial preparation of C60 fullerenes as growth nucleators for the SWCNTs was conducted. Enhancement in the yield of the produced SWCNT has been achieved with exploring different dispersing media for the fullerenes, the period, and environ...
متن کاملOptimized Conditions for Catalytic Chemical Vapor Deposition of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotubes
Here, we have synthesized vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VA-CNTs), using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Cobalt and ethanol are used as the catalyst and the carbon source, respectively. The effects of ethanol flow rate, thickness of Co catalyst film, and growth time on the properties of the carbon nanotube growth are investigated. The results show that the flow rate of ethanol and...
متن کاملInvestigation of Optimal Parameters for Oxide-Assisted Growth of Vertically Aligned Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes
An investigation into the optimal growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in vertical arrays, or carpets, is presented utilizing atomic hydrogen catalyst activation with hot filament chemical vapor deposition. Using acetylene decomposition over Fe catalyst, we study the effect of oxidant-assisted growth using O2, CO2, and H2O. Whereas trace amounts of O2 result in the lack of any catal...
متن کاملComparison between Copper and Iron as Catalyst for Chemical Vapor Deposition of Horizontally Aligned Ultralong Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes on Silicon Substrates
A careful comparison was performed between Cu and Fe as catalysts for the growth of horizontally aligned ultralong single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) arrays on SiOx/Si substrates, and the mechanism of the difference was discussed. Cleaner and straighter SWNTs with smaller diameters and narrower size distribution were obtained using Cu as catalyst. It was also found that the SWNTs always grew ...
متن کاملPreferential Growth of Semiconducting Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes on Substrate by Europium Oxide
In this paper, we have demonstrated that europium oxide (Eu(2)O(3)) is a new type of active catalyst for single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) growth under suitable conditions. Both random SWNT networks and horizontally aligned SWNT arrays are efficiently grown on silicon wafers. The density of the SWNT arrays can be altered by the CVD conditions. This result further provides the experimental ...
